Gastrointestinal surgery is a specialty in which all the pathologies are approached from the medical/surgical point of view involving the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, liver and common bile route, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine and colon, as well as some other organs of the endocrine type, as in the parathyroid, thyroids and adrenal glands. The laparoscopic approach, or minimally invasive surgical procedures have become an important tool since has been demonstrated to give better results in the recovery of the patient, as well as better aesthetic results.
Esophagus
Diseases that affect the esophagus, are much more frequent than thought of, some of these are: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Hiatal Hernia, Achalasia, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer, among others. The diagnosis is easily performed by means of an endoscopic study of the upper digestive tract, which is a fast and simple procedure. Some cases can require some other type of study. The definitive treatment is by surgery and in the majority of cases they are performed with a laparoscopic approach.
Stomach
Stomach diseases are generally presented/displayed in a common group of symptoms: like gastritis, vomiting, sensation being full or gastric distension. Symptoms which maybe we have not given suitable attention to them since they are generally relieved by “off-the-shelf” medicines and without medical supervision. Causing gastric diseases to be diagnosed in very advanced stages or in the presence of other complications like bleeding or gastric perforation. The most frequent diseases are: Peptic ulcers and gastric (stomach) Cancer. The diagnosis is performed generally by means of endoscopic study and its treatment is based on a combination of medicine and surgery.
Small Intestine

The duodenal ulcer is one of the most seen gastric problems mainly in adult patients; it’s related to the aggressive medication ingestion for the intestine, alcohol or tobacco consumption and its relation with a bacterium (Helicobacter pylori). Normally it appears with abdominal pain about 1-3 hrs after eating and the diagnosis is performed by means of endoscopy. Benign and malignant tumors in the small intestine are rare.

The treatment is frequently successful when it’s combined with surgery with medication.

Colon
Colon, rectum and anus problems are diseases that have undergone modifications in the last 20 years. Currently, they appear at an earlier age and with greater aggressiveness. From benign diseases like Diverticular Disease (diverticulosis and diverticulitis) that previously appeared in patients older than 50 years old, we now see it also in people in their 40 years of age, being more and more frequent the diagnosis and accompanied with greater complications. A more and more frequent ailment in our patients are Hemorrhoids, of which myths and false theories for its treatment have been created, creating multiple “off-the-shelf” products that offer a cure this disease but that unfortunately in some cases is a total waste of time; worsening the problem and the possibility of later on creating complications. On the other hand, colorectal cancer has gained terrain, since it appears every time in a younger population and with greater aggressiveness, creating the necessity from an early diagnosis and opportune treatment.
