It is the gold standard in obesity surgery for weight loss because of the excellent results achieved. It is a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure: It consists in dividing the stomach creating a small pouch (restrictive) to which is later connected to the intestine. This will allow any food that falls into the stomach to go directly to the inferior part of the lower intestine, without going through the first part of the same bowel (malabsorptive). Thus, restricting the ingestion and absorption of foods. Malabsorptive procedures are more effective, as in the loss of excess weight, than the restrictive procedures; nevertheless it still implies a major surgical risk and nutritional deficiencies.

This is a very effective procedure for an obese patient that is looking to lose weight in a fast and permanent way. The disadvantage with this type of procedure is its malabsorptive component, as its name implies, it brings a bad absorption of ingested foods, leading to a loss of weight with but a predominant vitamin deficit, reason why you will have to consume nutritional supplements for life. Check-ups and control of these patients will have to be performed periodically by our team, with the aim of guaranteeing a suitable weight loss and an adequate nutritional state.
