Inguinal Hernias PDF Print E-mail

The abdominal cavity is covered by a muscle layer that normally keeps the organs in their place. If a segment of that muscular wall is debilitated, an abnormal protrusion (swelling) of intra-abdominal tissue can appear through it. The mentioned before is what we call a hernia.
The hernias can be congenital (from birth) or be acquired.
Hernias are caused by weakness or a tear of the muscular wall. Some general predisposing factors are:

  • Obesity
  • Undernourishment
  • Heavy abdominal exercise
  • Respiratory problems (chronic cough)
  • Constipation
  • Prostate problems
  • Pregnancy
  • Old age (slow healing)
  • Previous surgery

Inguinal hernia treatment is with surgery, which can be performed by a laparoscopic approach with the use of prosthetic material (synthetic meshes). Repairing of the defect without any tension. With a synthetic mesh, it causes fibrosis avoiding the hernia to return.
