Obesity
In the last two decades, obesity had a more than 30% increase in Mexico, a percentage slightly greater than in the U.S.A. At the moment it’s considered an epidemiological health problem and a priority in the schemes of the international prevention and treatment for diseases.
Diagnosis of obesity is known by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI) of a person which is dividing the subject's weight by the square of his/her height.

Obesity is the number one health risk factor that can be prevented and controlled; it is also directly related with many diseases like:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Heart-attacks, strokes (CVA) and intestinal problems
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Embolism
  • Infertility
  • Certain types of Cancers ( Mammar, cervix, colon, pancreas, among others)
  • Gallbladder Problems (gallstones)
  • Osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis) of knees, hips and lower back.
  • Among other diseases.

All people whose BMI is greater or equal to 30 are candidates to a medical (nutritional) and/or surgical therapy, depending each particular case. Recent international studies show that in morbid obesity, nutritional therapy by itself has failed in more than 95% of the patients.

An opportune and multidisciplinary therapy in these cases can become the solution to your obesity problem, also even in completely controlling its associated diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Systemic Arterial Hypertension, Infertility, and among others.

Obesity surgery is a procedure that has been performed for almost 50 years, with the aim of obtaining a suitable weight loss and giving patients their health back who have failed with medical treatment (diet and exercise). Obesity is due to multi-factor situations; this means that there are several influencing situations like genetics, psychological tendencies to the food consumption, the type and amount of foods ingested and daily physical activities that are performed, nevertheless obesity is considered a controllable disease as long as it’s taken care of by an expert team in this type of ailment.

In 1991, the National Institute of Health (NIH) proposes a surgical intervention at a BMI of 35. Later the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) suggests a surgical intervention at a BMI of 30 or more in people who present/display associated diseases or that have an elevated risk to develop them.

The surgical procedures for obesity treatment are divided in two groups:

Restrictive: It consists of restricting the capacity of the stomach, and therefore the total food ingestion is reduced. Derivativos o Malabsortivos: It entails deviation of the normal transit of foods in the organism, through intestinal anastomosis.
