Gastric Balloon in Guadalajara, Mexico
SPATZ Adjustable Gastric Balloon — a non-surgical, reversible weight loss option for patients with BMI 27-40 who are not ready for bariatric surgery. Placed endoscopically in 20-30 minutes.
Honest disclosure: we use the SPATZ brand because it is the most advanced (adjustable, up to 12 months). But we do not recommend the balloon for everyone — most patients gain weight back after removal. We will tell you honestly if surgery is a better long-term option for your case.

What is the SPATZ gastric balloon?
A silicone balloon is placed in the stomach via endoscopy (no incisions, no surgery). The balloon is then filled with saline to occupy stomach space, making you feel full with less food.
Why SPATZ specifically:
- ✓ Adjustable volume — we can increase or decrease saline based on tolerance
- ✓ 12 months duration (vs 6 months for older balloon brands)
- ✓ FDA-cleared technology with proven outcomes
- ✓ Higher weight loss than non-adjustable balloons (typically 25-40 lbs)
Placement: 20-30 minutes under light sedation. No incisions. You go home the same day. No hospital stay.
Removal: After 12 months, balloon is removed via endoscopy (same procedure in reverse).
Honest considerations — should you choose balloon or surgery?
✅ Balloon may be right if:
- • BMI 27-35, not ready for surgery
- • Need to lose weight before another surgery
- • Have not tried structured diet + medical supervision yet
- • Specific short-term goal (wedding, event, transplant evaluation)
- • Willing to follow strict nutrition protocol during balloon period
⚠️ Surgery is likely better if:
- • BMI ≥ 35 or significant comorbidities
- • Type 2 diabetes (surgery has much higher remission rate)
- • Want lasting weight loss (5+ years)
- • Concerned about regaining weight after removal
- • Cannot adapt to strict eating during 12-month balloon period
Most patients regain a portion of weight after balloon removal unless they have built strong eating habits. We will be honest about your prognosis during consultation.
