Post-Op Bariatric Diet — 4 Phases Recovery Guide
Official post-operative bariatric diet from Dr. Alejandro López. Follow these 4 phases carefully to ensure proper healing and prevent complications.
General rules for the first weeks
- ✓ No solid food until cleared
- ✓ Chew very slowly (20-30 times per bite)
- ✓ Small bites — stop at first sense of fullness
- ✓ Don’t drink while eating
- ✓ Stop liquids 15 min before eating
- ✓ Resume liquids 30-45 min after eating
- ✓ No carbonated drinks or alcohol for 6 weeks
- ✓ No straws, no gum (cause swallowing of air)
- ✓ Introduce new foods one at a time
- ✓ Hydration: 1.5-2.5 L per day
- ✓ Always prioritize protein
🔵 The 4 phases of post-op recovery
Phase I — Clear liquids
Goal: Hydration and initial healing.
Allowed: Clear protein drinks · Fat-free broth · Sugar-free gelatin · Sugar-free popsicles · Low-sugar electrolyte drinks · Water · Decaf tea
Avoid: Sugar juices · Regular Gatorade · Added sugar
Phase II — Full liquids
Goal: Increase protein and nutrition.
Allowed: Protein shakes · Skim/lactose-free milk · Low-fat yogurt (Greek, sugar-free) · Blended soups (no chunks) · Light creams without potato or corn
Phase III — Puree / Soft
Goal: Transition to soft texture.
Allowed: Soft scrambled egg · Low-fat cottage cheese · Pureed chicken/turkey/fish · Beans/lentils · Soft cooked vegetables · Soft fruits (banana, applesauce)
Avoid: Dry meats · Bread, rice, pasta · Raw vegetables
Phase IV — Soft → Regular
Goal: Establish permanent healthy eating patterns.
